Govalle Neighborhood Association

The most recent incarnation of the Govalle Neighborhood Association was started in 2008 by Nine Francois and Talitha Phillips. The organization was begun as a response to unsolicited development in the neighborhood and lack of notification. By banding neighbors together under a Neighborhood Association, the voices of many could be heard stronger than the voices of one. The point of Govalle Neighborhood Association has never been anything like that of a Home Owners Association. The Neighborhood Association doesn’t care what color you paint your house or what you do with your front yard. What we do care about is having our voices heard and having a say in how our neighborhood is developed.

When a developer seeks to build in  our area, in the case where they need approval of zoning, we have an opportunity as a neighborhood to make our voices heard. We advocate for:

  • All developments include some level of affordability.
  • Large developments contribute Community Benefits in scale with the size of the project.
  • Interior and Exterior decoration by our local artists and makers
  • Encourage businesses to higher local
  • Make sure construction is done responsibly (i.e., no heritage trees removed, and trucks use designated truck roads, etc.).

Most importantly, Govalle Neighborhood Association is a group of neighbors committed to protecting and implementing the 2003 Neighborhood Plan.   Download the 2003 plan: 2003_govalle-neighborhood plan.
