"Dick Higgins coined the fortuitous formula of 'intermedia,' which he wanted clearly to distinguish from multimedia. Multimedia resulted from addition and juxtaposition, while intermedia focused on heretofore empty spaces between rigidly separated and defined arts. The guiding principles of intermedia were subtraction and reduction rather than addition, in that the intermedia event also tended to be, in Maciunas' words, concrete, monomorphic, untheatrical, and, especially in the laconic pieces of George Brecht, minimalist."
